Job Description


The Business Development Manager (BDM) is responsible for the growth of MSMC’s commercial, industrial, and architectural (CIA) sales. The BDMs primary functions are to increase MSMC’s brand recognition, specification rates, and close ratios through collaborative relationships with Architects, Spec Writers, and MSMC team members, specifically our CIA Territory Sales Managers. This role directly supports technical questions from the design community, customers and team members pertaining to MSMC products, services and capabilities. This position is also responsible for identifying, analyzing, and driving growth opportunities for products and services within the CIA business. In addition, the BDM will work with internal teams and key vendors to progress MSMC CIA initiatives.  The BDM role will develop, deploy and present AIA accredited presentations to groups of architects or owners to increase specification rates.

Metal Sales Manufacturing Corporation is the nation’s largest manufacturer of metal roofing and building systems with 21 locations across America.  The BDM for the Midwest will support regional customers and the following MSMC manufacturing plants:

  • Rock Island, IL
  • Independence, MO
  • Rogers, MN
  • Detroit Lakes, MN
  • Sioux Falls, SD

You’ll be responsible for (but not limited to):

  • Identify and develop a plan to target key architects, building owners, and GC’s to generate specifications, hold specifications and gain substitution approvals.
  • Answer application and technical (structural, building code, product, project, and process specific) questions in a timely fashion.
  • Work with MSMC Technical Services to ensure consistent specifications are developed and worked effectively from design development thru bidding and closing.
  • Identify and target independent specification writers and companies to grow MSMC specifications more effectively and efficiently.
  • Work with TSM’s to help them understand how to build relationships with the smaller GC’s, Sub-contractors and the regional branches of the larger Architectural firms.
  • Review, develop, and present AIA CE presentations to targeted accounts. Maximize presentation efforts by qualifying and targeting AIA events with multiple firms attending.
  • Identify and report regularly on products/service/capability gaps for future CIA offers.
  • Communicate and work with Marketing on training and trade show requirements for the region.
  • Establish specification rate goals, follow-up and tracking metrics for CIA projects in the region.
  • Track architects, GC’s, owners and opportunities in the CRM. Work with Lead Generation Coordinator to progress leads from early development into bid phase.
  • Identify, document, and report quarterly on planning projects in the region.
  • Support the assessment of market needs in a region to increase the adoption effectiveness of new products and service options.
  • Work closely with Lead Generation Coordinators on substitution requests. Identify architectural firms not specifying MSMC products and work to become the basis for design with those firms.

Job Requirements

The most qualified candidates will have:

  • College Degree in Engineering, Industrial Design, Architecture or equivalent experience in the technical sale of architecturally specified building materials
  • At least 5 years in the Commercial Construction Building Materials Industry
  • Deep understanding of commercial construction practices, timelines, and schedules
  • Proven sales success calling on Architects and General Contractors
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to multitask in a fast paced environment
  • Self-starter with high desire for individual and collective success
  • Ability to travel throughout the region at least 50% of the time
  • Computer Skills include (MS Excel, CAD, MS Word, MS Power Point, MS Outlook)
  • Ability to read and create drawings for custom details
  • Project management skills, great presentation skills, and business plan development skills
